Mykonos is one of the most cosmopolitan Mediterranean destinations, as it annually attracts thousands of visitors. And among them, a lot of celebrities from all over the world, who come here to enjoy the sun, the luxurious hotels, the exquisite cuisine and of course the wild night life. The mostly photographed Hora with the little white houses and the paved, mazy streets cannot be accessed by car nor a bike. However, you absolutely need either one to visit the innumerable hot spots of the island.
The Island of Winds boasts amazing sandy beaches, most of which are very well organized, with beach bars and exclusive services. The most popular are: Paradise, Super Paradise, Psarrou, Agrari, Elia, Agios Ioannis, Platis Gyalos, Lia, Kalafatis, Panormos, Agios Stefanos and Kalo Livadi. Some of them are more trendy, while others are more family friendly. The island’s road network to all these beaches is very good, even though drivers should always be careful.
The island boasts remnants of prehistoric and Neolithic settlements (in Divounia and in Ftelia), churches (such as the church of Paraportiani, the Monastery of Agios Panteleimon in Marathi, the monastery of Virgin Tourliani, the monastery of Palaiokastro) and museums (such as the Archeological, the Marine and the Folk Art Museum). Most of these can be accessed by a car or a bike, while for some you need to leave your vehicle and walk through the designated trails.
An extremely interesting attraction that is definitely worth seeing is the Mycenaean 15th century BC arched tomb in the location Aggelika. Most of the artifacts found in the tomb are now exhibited in the Archeological Museum.
Another point of interest is the famous lighthouse Armenistis, which was built in 1891. The mechanism of the lighthouse was awarded by the International Exhibition of Paris and was fully operational until 1983. The lighthouse was constructed after the marine accident of the British steamboat Volta in 1887, on the northern coast of Mykonos.
Mykonos offers so much more than a vibrant night life and luxurious hotels. This magical island is filled with history and culture and it’s definitely worth a visit!
